Chapter Fifteen

The Crown Victoria wasn't fazed in the least by pulling a covered trailer at interstate speeds, and its V8 engine loafed along at a fairly low rpm, even on mild upgrades. David and I took turns driving, swapping every hundred miles or so.

We stopped for supper at a Cracker Barrel, and Grandma insisted on paying. Over supper, she and David had a brief conversation about what he should call her, and she said, “If we're all going to live together, David, you can't go on calling me Mrs. Simpson. It sounds way too formal."

"What shall I call you, then?"

"Mabel will do."

"I don't think I can do that."

"Why not?"

"Where I come from, people my age don't call people your age by their given names."

"I can understand that,” she said. “Why don't you call me Grandma, then?"

"I can do that,” he said.

"Good. Then no more Mrs. Simpson this and Mrs. Simpson that, okay?"

"Okay, Grandma, you win,” he said.

"You're darn tootin'."

"I'm glad we got that settled,” I said, laughing. “Are you guys ready to look for a motel?"

"Why?” Grandma said. “It's early, and I'm not sleepy. Are you? Besides, if we stop now, what would we do with the evening? I'd sooner keep on going for a bit than sit in a room watching the TV."

"That's okay with me. What about you, David?"

"We could probably cover another two hundred miles before bedtime."

"All right, then, that's what we'll do."

When we were on the road, Grandma said, “I can't remember the last time I went on a long car trip, but it's been years."

"Didn't you and Grandpa drive me to Jacksonville one year so I could spend the summer with Aunt Laura?"

"I think we did that a couple of times, now that you mention it. Those trips may have been the last times we actually went anywhere outside of Iowa."

"The only problem with driving after dark,” David said, “is that you don't get to see much of the countryside."

"What's to see?” she said. “Except flat farmland. As I recall, the countryside doesn't get very interesting until we get to Kentucky."

"Yeah, you're probably right."

We stopped for the night at a chain motel and rented two rooms, for which Grandma insisted on paying. I had secured the trailer with a sturdy lock before we left Iowa, and we felt comfortable leaving the car and trailer across the parking lot from our rooms. Before we retired, we agreed to meet for breakfast at six thirty so we could be on the road by seven.

David and I put the privacy sign outside our door and settled down for the night. I took a few minutes with my laptop and accessed the Internet through the free wireless, as we hadn't had that luxury in Iowa, and we checked our e-mail accounts. Then we stripped, crawled in bed, and turned out the lights.

"Alone at last,” I said.

"Yeah. I'm sort of glad she didn't insist on sharing a room with us."

"She started to, but I told her it didn't cost that much, and she needed her privacy.
